The day the only independent theater in town closed, I
almost cried because it was my window to a bigger world. Its films it showed a
larger slice of life and different worlds than those at mainstream theaters.
Since stumbling upon Film Society, I have developed a more refined taste for
what I view. (My dad says I’m no fun to take to movies anymore, because I don’t
like blockbuster action flicks that are an excuse to display special effects.)
Although there have been some well-made action films but for every cinematic
masterpiece in this genre, there are a dozen that aren’t worth my time. By
joining Film Society, I opened myself up to a film genre that is widely ignored
in America. Powerful messages, wonderful aesthetics, and a different kind of
humor all manifest themselves through these films, and it has been my fortune to
discover them.
